Winter Workout Tips

It's certainly getting cold here in Hong Kong, but you are not going let a drop in temperature stop you from staying active. So here are some of California Fitness' winter exercise tips to help you cure the winter blues with fitness.

Warm Up
Cold temperatures can make your muscles tight which makes exercise uncomfortable and leaves you more prone to injury. Make sure you do a thorough warm-up prior to your exercise. Try dynamic warm ups or may be even take a hot shower before your workout. Your should also start your workout with something easy.

Layer Up
Many people make the mistake of dressing too warmly when they workout during winter. Because exercise generates heat, you could get a lot warmer once you get going. But when you start to slow down and the sweat on your body begins to dry you will feel cold. So if you are exercising outdoor during winter, it's best to dress in layers and remove them as you need to.

Stay Hydrated
You can lose body fluids through sweat even in cold weather, so it is important to stay hydrated. Try to drink eight to 12 cups of water a day and at least 1/2 cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise. It is just as important to stay hydrated after exercise and to drink enough water to satisfy your thirst.

Try Something New
Winter is a great time to experiment with your workout, why not give that new piece of equipment you have always been scared of a try or attend new Group X class.

Phone a Friend
Don't go it alone. An exercise partner will help you to stay motivated when it's cold outside, so call a friend and stay active together.

Make the Most of the Daylight
Make the most of the sun light and stretch your legs during lunchtime. Go for lunch time workout, a walk or a run.
